Best e-reader: Kindle, Kobo and what to check
Most readers are well served by the Kindle Paperwhite: a sharp 7-inch screen, warm light and waterproofing. If you borrow e-books from a public library or buy EPUBs from other shops, a Kobo is the more open choice.

Buying tips
- Check where you already own e-books; moving from Kindle to another platform is difficult.
- In Germany, Onleihe library loans work on Tolino and Kobo readers, not on Kindle.
- Choose the ad-free version of a Kindle if you do not want ads on the lock screen.
Questions and answers
Can I read EPUB files on a Kindle?
Yes, if they are DRM-free: you send them via Send to Kindle and Amazon converts them. EPUBs with Adobe DRM, as used by many shops and libraries, do not work on a Kindle.
Is a colour e-reader worth it?
For comics, cookbooks and highlighting, yes. For novels, black and white screens are slightly sharper and have better contrast.
