How much RAM do I need in a laptop?
Short answer
For most people, 16 GB of RAM is the right amount in a laptop today. It handles browsing, office work, video calls and light photo editing with room to spare. Choose 32 GB for video editing, software development with virtual machines or heavy multitasking. 8 GB only suits very light use.
What RAM actually does
RAM is the laptop's short-term memory. Every open app, browser tab and file you are working on takes up some of it. When it runs out, the laptop moves data to the much slower storage, and everything starts to feel sluggish.
More RAM does not make a laptop faster in itself. It keeps it fast when you have a lot open at once.
Why 16 GB is the new baseline
Browsers, video-call apps and new AI features use more memory than a few years ago. A laptop with 8 GB can feel fine on day one and tight two years later.
In many thin laptops, including all MacBooks, the RAM is soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded. What you buy is what you keep, so it pays to choose a little more than you need today.
What to watch out for
A few details on the spec sheet tell you more than the number alone.
- Check whether the RAM is soldered or upgradable before you buy.
- Laptops without a separate graphics card share RAM with the graphics chip, so more RAM helps there.
- Don't confuse RAM with storage: 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD are two different things.
- For gaming laptops, 16 GB is the minimum and 32 GB gives headroom for newer games.
| Use | RAM |
|---|---|
| Browsing, streaming, writing | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB better |
| Office, video calls, many tabs | 16 GB |
| Photo editing, light gaming | 16–32 GB |
| Gaming laptop | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for headroom |
| Video editing, 3D, virtual machines | 32 GB or more |
Questions and answers
Is 8 GB of RAM enough for a student?
For writing and browsing it works, but 16 GB stays comfortable for much longer. Since RAM often can't be upgraded later, 16 GB is the safer choice for a laptop you want to use for several years.
Do Macs need less RAM than Windows laptops?
Macs with Apple chips use memory efficiently, but the same rule of thumb applies. The MacBook Air M4 starts with 16 GB, which suits most people. Go for more if you edit video or run demanding software.
