How much storage do I need on a phone or laptop?

Updated · by · How Magelo recommends

Short answer

For most people, 256 GB is the sweet spot on a phone and 512 GB on a laptop. Choose 128 GB on a phone only if you keep photos in the cloud and shoot little video. Go for 1 TB or more on a laptop for video editing, big photo libraries or games.

Why you need more than you think

The operating system and preinstalled apps take a noticeable share before you add anything. Photos, 4K videos, messaging apps and offline music or maps then fill the rest faster than expected.

Devices also need free space to install updates and stay fast. A phone or laptop that is almost full often slows down and can fail to update.

Upgrading later is often not possible

Check this before you buy, because it decides how much you should pay for up front.

  • iPhones and most flagship Android phones have no microSD slot.
  • MacBooks and many thin Windows laptops have storage that cannot be replaced.
  • Some Windows laptops have a replaceable SSD or a second slot.
  • An external USB-C SSD is a good way to add space for photos and video.

Cloud storage: help, not a replacement

Cloud storage is great for backups and for keeping older photos off the device. But larger plans are a running subscription, and you need a good connection to get your files back.

A sensible approach: buy enough storage for the files you use every day, and let the cloud handle backups and the archive.

Questions and answers

Is 128 GB enough for a phone?

For light use with photos backed up to the cloud, yes. If you film a lot, keep offline media or want to use the phone for many years, 256 GB is the safer choice.

Is storage the same as RAM?

No. Storage keeps your files and apps permanently, while RAM is the short-term working memory for what is open right now. Both matter, but for different reasons.
